Mercosur, Fitto: ‘Agreement strengthens Europe’s role in the world’

Brussels, 3 September (LaPresse) – “Today, at the meeting of the College of Commissioners, we approved two agreements of great importance: the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement (EMPA) and the EU-Mexico Modernised Global Agreement (MGA). The EU-Mercosur agreement (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) is not just a chapter in trade policy: it is a strategic, political and economic choice to strengthen Europe’s role in the world.” This was written on social media by the Vice-President of the European Commission, Raffaele Fitto. “Currently, European companies face very high tariffs – up to 35% on many products. With this agreement, most of these tariffs will be gradually eliminated, ensuring greater competitiveness for our companies in Mercosur markets, new export opportunities for European operators and greater economic security for the EU,” he added. To address the concerns of farmers, consumers and Member States, the agreement will be accompanied by concrete measures: strengthened controls and checks in partner countries; stricter food safety standards; additional tools to protect our environmental and social standards,” Fitto concluded.
