Rome, Sept. 21 (LaPresse) – Italy got off to a strong start in the Billie Jean King Cup final against the USA. Elisabetta Cocciaretto defeated Emma Navarro in the first singles match with a straight-sets 6-4, 6-4, giving Italy a 1-0 lead. Next up is Jasmine Paolini against Jessica Pegula in the second singles. A year after their triumph in Malaga, Italy, appearing in their third consecutive final, is aiming for a second straight victory.
“It was an incredible match. I knew she was strong, and I tried to play my best, and I managed to win a great match,” said Elisabetta Cocciaretto after her victory over Emma Navarro. “I had to be aggressive,” the Italian added. “She is a more physical player than me, so I had to stay close to the baseline. The key today was managing the important points well, and I’m really happy. I have to thank my captain, my coach Fausto Scolari, and the rest of the team.”
