Rome, 25 September (LaPresse) – In Shanghai, seven years after their last success, the Italian men’s quadruple sculls team became world champions. It is a repeat victory for Luca Rambaldi, Andrea Panizza and Giacomo Gentili, with Luca Chiumento replacing Filippo Mondelli, coxswain in Plovdiv in 2018 who passed away in 2021 due to osteosarcoma. The Italian team, with the tricolour flag in hand, dedicated the victory to their friend “Pippo”. Italy, already winners of Sunday’s heat and Tuesday’s semi-final, finished first with a lead of almost two seconds over Great Britain and three seconds and twenty-six hundredths over Poland. It was a victory that was never in doubt, with the Italian boat taking the lead from the start and never relinquishing it, increasing its lead halfway through and managing well in the final stage. The four Fiamme rowers thus confirmed the extraordinary tradition of the quadruple sculls: gold in Plovdiv in 2018, bronze in Linz in 2019, bronze in Racice in 2022 and silver in Belgrade in 2023, as well as winning silver at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with the same line-up (Chiumento, Rambaldi, Panizza, Gentili) at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
