West Nile, new case in the Oristano area: 35 since the beginning of the year

Cagliari, Oct. 1 (LaPresse) – A new case of West Nile fever has been reported today by the Health and Prevention Department of the Oristano local health authority (ASL). The patient is a 70-year-old man from Cabras, who visited the emergency room at San Martino Hospital in Oristano with fever symptoms and was discharged with home treatment.

This brings the total number of symptomatic West Nile virus cases in Oristano province to 35 in 2025. An epidemiological investigation has already been launched, and the area surrounding the patient’s residence is being mapped out for disinfestation within a 200-meter radius.

“Once again, we urge particularly vulnerable and elderly individuals to adopt all necessary prevention and protection measures against mosquitoes, which transmit the West Nile virus,” reiterated Maria Valentina Marras, director of the Health and Prevention Department of ASL 5 Oristano.

“It is essential to avoid stagnant water — where mosquito larvae thrive — by frequently emptying pet bowls, saucers, containers, and children’s pools. When outdoors, especially at dusk, people should wear light-colored clothing that covers the arms and legs, use insect repellents, and install mosquito nets on doors and windows to protect their homes.”
