Soccer: Boca Juniors in mourning, coach Miguel Ángel Russo dies

Milan, Oct. 9 (LaPresse) – Mourning in Argentine soccer. Boca Juniors coach Miguel Ángel Russo, whose long career touched more than a dozen clubs in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Spain, and Colombia, has died after a long battle with cancer. The Argentine club itself announced the news. He was 69 years old.
“Club Atlético Boca Juniors announces with deep sadness the passing of Miguel Ángel Russo,” the club posted on social media. “Miguel leaves an indelible mark on our institution and will always be an example of joy, warmth, and dedication. We stand by his family and loved ones in this moment of grief. Farewell, dear Miguel!” added Boca.
Russo, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, had accepted a contract to coach Boca Juniors for a third period in June. He had previously coached the team in 2007 and from 2020 to 2021. Russo’s last major competition with Boca Juniors was the FIFA Club World Cup this summer. He had taken a leave at the end of last month due to the worsening of his health conditions.
