Manila (Philippines), 10 October (LaPresse/AP) – Two powerful earthquakes struck the same region in the southern Philippines within a few hours of each other. The first, measuring 7.4, caused at least seven deaths, landslides and the evacuation of nearby coastal areas due to fears of a tsunami, which later subsided. The second earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8, triggered a new local tsunami warning. It was generated by the same fault system, the Philippine Trench, at a depth of 37 kilometres off the city of Manay, in the province of Davao Oriental, reported the director of the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology, Teresito Bacolcol, expressing fears that the second tremor, which occurred at night, could further weaken or collapse buildings already damaged by the first earthquake.
