Skiing: World Cup, Odermatt wins giant slalom in Sölden, Vinatzer eighth after comeback

Rome, 26 Oct. (LaPresse) – Great spectacle in Solden, Austria, for the first men’s giant slalom race. Despite the wind, which forced the organisers to lower the start, and the snow and fog that delayed the second run by an hour, there was no shortage of excitement, thanks to the great skiers who put on their best performance on the slopes. Marco Odermatt won for the 46th time with a time of 1’56″03, just 24 hundredths of a second ahead of a resurgent Marco Schwarz. Norway’s Atle Lie McGrath was just three hundredths of a second slower, taking the third step on the podium. Alex Vinatzer had an excellent second run, finishing eighth overall, his third-best result in his career in this discipline, 1.02 seconds behind Odermatt, but climbing 13 places from his 21st place in the first run. Filippo Della Vite and Tobias Kastlunger did not qualify. The next event in the men’s Cup will be the slalom in Levi, Finland, on 16 November.
