Digital euro, ECB: “Moving forward with the next phase, first issuance possible in 2029”

Frankfurt, Oct. 30 (LaPresse) – The Governing Council of the European Central Bank has decided to move forward to the next phase of the digital euro project. This decision follows the successful completion of the preparatory phase, launched by the Eurosystem in November 2023, which laid the foundations for issuing a digital euro, according to an ECB statement. The Governing Council will make the final decision on whether to issue a digital euro and on its issuance date only after the adoption of the legislation. If European co-legislators adopt the regulation establishing the digital euro in 2026, a pilot exercise and the first operations could take place starting from mid-2027. The entire Eurosystem should then be ready for a potential first issuance of the digital euro in 2029.
