Washington (USA), 4 Mar. (LaPresse/AP) – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that his country will apply tariffs on more than 100 billion dollars' worth of US goods over a period of 21 days, in response to the 25% tariffs on imported Canadian goods imposed by US President Donald Trump that came into effect overnight. ‘The dialogue will continue, but we are ready to respond,’ Canadian Defence Minister Bill Blair said in Ottawa, entering a special cabinet meeting on US-Canada relations, ’there are still discussions going on.’ Shortly after Blair's speech, Trudeau announced that Canada will impose tariffs of 25% on 155 billion Canadian dollars (107 billion US dollars) of US goods, starting immediately with tariffs on 30 billion Canadian dollars (21 billion US dollars) of goods and span of three weeks on the remaining amount of US products. ‘Our tariffs will remain in place until the US trade action is withdrawn and, in the event that US tariffs do not cease, we are in continuous dialogue with the provinces and territories to pursue various non-tariff measures,’ Trudeau said.
