Ukraine, EU: “Fight against corruption is central to accession”

Brussels, Nov. 12 (LaPresse) – “We do not comment on individual cases. As for the fight against corruption in Ukraine, our general position is clearly outlined in our recent Enlargement Package. The fight against corruption is a central element for a country’s accession to the European Union. It requires ongoing efforts to ensure a strong capacity to combat corruption and to uphold the rule of law. The role of independent anti-corruption bodies—which are fundamental pillars of the rule of law in Ukraine as a future member state—must be safeguarded. This investigation demonstrates that the anti-corruption organizations are operational.” This was stated by a spokesperson for the European Commission, commenting on the corruption scandal that has hit Ukraine and involves the state nuclear company Energoatom. “The Commission will continue to monitor the situation closely,” they added.
