Vienna, November 22 (LaPresse) – “The independence of the ECB is not in question. We have one of the strongest and most clearly defined forms of central bank independence in the world, firmly anchored in the EU Treaties.” This was stated by ECB President Christine Lagarde, speaking at the European meeting of the Trilateral Commission in Vienna, Austria. “There is always the concern that a short-sighted government might be tempted to pressure a central bank to finance its own debt, despite the lessons of history.” A concern “that tends to emerge when public debt is high, as it is today in several jurisdictions,” Lagarde added.
