Former Ilva, Bombardieri: ‘We condemn the squadrist attack in Genoa’

Rome, 5 December (LaPresse) – ‘I express my sympathy and solidarity with the UILM delegates who were attacked this morning in Genoa: we condemn the squadrist attack on the FIOM delegates and expect the same condemnation from the CGIL and FIOM’. This was stated by UIL Secretary General PierPaolo Bombardieri, who, on the sidelines of a meeting of UIL Veneto executives and activists currently taking place in Padua, commented on the events that occurred in Genoa during the demonstrations on the Ilva affair. ‘We must be careful,’ Bombardieri stressed, “because democracy cannot be defended with aggression. If there are differences of opinion and people resort to aggression, there is a risk of verging on terrorism. It is important to state clearly that tensions should not be resolved through aggression. This is not the way to engage in debate. We can have different positions, and we will have them; there are different histories, sensibilities and assessments: trade union pluralism is an asset for democracy, but aggression is never justifiable.”
