Prisons, National Ombudsman: ‘More officers are needed to combat suicide’

Rome, 13 December (LaPresse) – How can we stem the epidemic of suicides, 76 already this year? “It is difficult to find a scientific generalisation given the autonomy of human will, but we certainly need more operators and officers to accompany people through the changes they are undergoing in their lives. It is true that overcrowding has no causal relationship with suicide, but the large number of people present reduces the possibility of attention. Then there is the serious problem of fragmentation in healthcare.” This is according to Riccardo Turrini Vita, current president of the National Board of Guarantors of the Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty, speaking to Il Manifesto.
