Court of Auditors, Schlein: “Government wants free hands and rejects all forms of oversight”

Rome, Dec. 28 (LaPresse) – “The reform of the Court of Auditors is yet another proof of the design of a government that considers itself above the law,” declares Pd secretary Elly Schlein. “The silence-as-consent mechanism and the maximum penalty cap for an official who breaks the law, together with the abolition of abuse of office, create a dangerous pocket of impunity,” emphasizes the Pd leader. “After all, Giorgia Meloni said it clearly and unequivocally when the Court of Auditors blocked the disastrous Strait of Messina Bridge project: this government wants free hands to do whatever it deems with Italians’ money, rejects all forms of oversight, and refuses any response that is not ‘yes, madam.’ For them, anyone who gains an extra vote in elections should not be subject to legality checks.”

“The separation of powers is a fundamental principle of democracy, which requires that each power, especially government, has adequate limits to guarantee everyone. It is this principle that is being attacked by the reforms of the Meloni government,” she concludes.
