Food poisoning in Campobasso, mother and daughter die: sent home from hospital twice

Campobasso, Dec. 28 (LaPresse) – Sara Di Vita, 15, and Antonella Di Ielsi, 50, mother and daughter who died of suspected food poisoning at Cardarelli Hospital, had visited the emergency room of the capital’s hospital on at least two occasions, both on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, before their condition worsened, leading to their hospitalization. This is what emerges from the reconstruction of the facts at the center of the investigation opened by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Campobasso, which is investigating a case of alleged food poisoning and has opened a file against persons unknown, delegating the Mobile Squad to carry out investigations. According to reports, the family—father, mother, and 15-year-old daughter—went to the hospital on December 25 and 26 with symptoms attributable to gastrointestinal discomfort following Christmas Eve dinner. In both cases, hospitalization was not ordered, and the family was sent home after tests deemed sufficient at the time. The situation took a turn for the worse the following day when the 15-year-old returned to the hospital in very serious condition. She was admitted to intensive care and died on Saturday evening. The mother, who arrived later at Cardarelli Hospital in critical condition and learned of her daughter’s death there, was also transferred to intensive care and died this morning. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened a file on the case, currently against persons unknown, ordering the acquisition of medical records and health reports and the seizure of the bodies. The investigations will have to clarify both the cause of the event—which has not yet been identified with certainty—and the management of the initial visits to the emergency room. Among the hypotheses being considered by investigators is that of poisoning or severe food poisoning, but no cause has been confirmed at this time. The investigation will seek to clarify whether the incident was caused by the ingestion of a toxin and, if so, what kind, especially given that several people attended the Christmas Eve dinner without any of them experiencing symptoms.
