Milan, Jan. 2 (LaPresse) – Argentina won the first tie of the 2026 United Cup in tennis. The South American team defeated Spain 2-0, earning the first points in Group A in Perth, which also includes the United States. The first official ATP match of the new season went to Argentine Sebastian Baez, world number 45, who gave his team the opening point. Baez, 24, making his debut in the competition, beat Spaniard Jaume Munar (ATP 33) 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 43 minutes. The odds were also overturned in the second match with the victory of Solana (WTA 66) over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (41) 6-4, 5-7, 6-0. Argentina then rounded off the score thanks to the mixed doubles, with Andreozzi-Carle winning 7-6(2), 6-2 against Cervantes-Cavalle Reimers.
