Iran: another night of protests, demonstrations continue for two weeks

Rome, 11 January (LaPresse) – Despite repression, protests challenging the Iranian regime have reached the two-week mark. With the internet down in Iran and telephone lines cut, it has become more difficult to get direct news of the demonstrations from abroad. However, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, the death toll has risen to 116. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has spoken of an imminent crackdown, despite warnings from the United States. Tehran has stepped up its threats, with Iranian Attorney General Mohammad Movahedi Azad warning yesterday that anyone participating in the protests will be considered an “enemy of God”, an offence punishable by death.
