Milan, 13 January (LaPresse) – Diplomacy worked ‘behind the scenes’ to secure the release of Alberto Trentini and Mario Burlò, who were released yesterday from Venezuelan prisons where they were being held. This was explained by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with Corriere della Sera. ‘Secretary of State Marco Rubio was a very important interlocutor for me,’ and the ‘turning point’ came only after the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. After the statement by the President of Parliament, “contacts became increasingly intense, and on Sunday at around 8:15 p.m., I received a phone call from the Venezuelan Foreign Minister informing me that our two fellow citizens would be released. But until they arrived at the embassy at 3.50 a.m. yesterday, until I spoke to them and made sure they were okay, we didn’t want to leak any information, because the situation in that country is very delicate.”
