Iran, Rutte: “Regime against its own people, allies in contact on crisis”

Brussels, Jan 13 (LaPresse) – “I hope we all agree that what is happening on the streets of Iran, what the leadership is doing against its own population, against people peacefully protesting to clearly express their opinions. Let us not forget, democracy is not just parliaments. Yes, parliaments are very important, but freedom of the media, legitimate protests, and the ability to make one’s opinions known are also part of democracy.” This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, speaking at the Global Europe Forum organized by Renew Europe at the European Parliament in Brussels. “This oppressive regime in Tehran is now applying massive force and massive violence against its own population. There are many reports of many people dead. I find this appalling. I can assure you that NATO allies are, day by day, navigating this crisis, in constant contact about this, but I think we can all agree in wishing the best for Iran and particularly not for the leadership, but for the Iranian people,” he added.
