Florence, 15 January (LaPresse) – “Today, finally, we have learned a truth that Italy has denied for years. The European Court of Human Rights has condemned the Italian state with a landmark ruling of priority importance.” This was posted on his Facebook profile by Fabio Anselmo, lawyer for the Magherini family, regarding the European Court of Human Rights’ condemnation of Italy for the death of Riccardo Magherini, the 40-year-old former Fiorentina Primavera player. The lawyer then emphasised that the ruling of the Strasbourg Court ‘obliges Italy to regulate coercive interventions on the street by law; to change a jurisprudence that has covered up the unjustifiable’. According to Anselmo, “it is a historic event. A harsh but necessary reminder: human rights are not optional. They always apply. For everyone. Even — and especially — when a person is fragile, frightened, in difficulty’. “This victory does not erase the pain, but it restores dignity, truth and justice. I dedicate it, with deep emotion, to the Magherini family,” he concludes. “Riccardo has not been forgotten”.
