Justice Referendum, Tajani: ‘Reform is for the independence of powers’

Turin, 21 January (LaPresse) – The referendum on justice “will not be a vote on the government. Whatever the outcome, the government will continue until the end of the legislature. It will be a vote to say: am I happy with things as they are, and therefore I vote no, or do I want a different justice system? They are saying that we want to put judges at the service of politics, but that is absolutely false; it is the exact opposite.‘ This was stated by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani at the Giornale readers’ party in Montegrotto Terme, Padua. ’We believe that a democratic system, as Montesquieu said, is based on the balance between the judicial, executive and legislative powers. No one should encroach on the other’s territory,‘ he explained. ’Precisely because we start from this judgement, because, let’s say, too often the judiciary has encroached on the territory of the others, we do not think that the executive power should encroach on the territory of the others. Everyone must be autonomous and independent from each other,” he continued. ‘My appeal is to get as many people as possible to vote, if you vote yes, because there is no quorum for this referendum. The more supporters of the yes vote go to the polls, the more likely it is that we will have a reform that allows citizens to have a fairer justice system and also some gains for the economy, because an efficient judicial system increases GDP by several points,’ he added.
