Greenland, Meloni: ‘An issue to be dealt with within NATO, US military invasion unrealistic’

Milan, 21 January (LaPresse) – Greenland, “in my opinion, is an issue that, as I have said many times, should be dealt with within the Atlantic Alliance. This is a matter for NATO. Greenland is to be considered NATO territory, the two nations involved in the discussions are both allies of the Atlantic Alliance, and the issue raised by the Americans is one of security in a strategic territory.” This was stated by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Rai1’s “Speciale Porta a porta – 30 anni della nostra vita” (Special Door to Door – 30 Years of Our Lives). “This is a valid issue, one that also concerns us. The entire Arctic, Greenland, both in terms of what is happening with climate change, are becoming areas,” she added, ‘that are particularly strategic, and certainly the risk that, for example, the raw materials that those territories are very rich in, which are coveted by many foreign powers, that there is not sufficient presence and sufficient control is a real issue. This is the issue raised by the Americans. To be honest, I was not surprised by what Donald Trump said. I have been saying for over a year that, in my opinion, it is unrealistic for the United States to invade Greenland militarily. Clearly, we all understand what the consequences of such a decision would be, so I was not surprised. I am glad that he reiterated this, that he put it in writing, but after that we need to look for solutions.
