Ukraine: EU document outlines £800 billion reconstruction plan

Brussels, 23 January (LaPresse) – The United States and the European Union hope to attract £800 billion in public and private funds to contribute to the reconstruction of Ukraine at the end of the conflict with Russia. This is according to Politico, referring to a document on the prosperity package for Kiev. The website writes about an 18-page document outlining a ten-year plan to ensure Ukraine’s recovery with an accelerated path to EU membership. According to reports, the European Commission distributed the plans to EU capitals ahead of last night’s leaders’ summit, where the document, dated 22 January, was discussed, according to three EU officials and diplomats. While Brussels and Washington are allocating hundreds of billions of dollars in long-term financing and proposing Ukraine as a future EU member and investment destination, the strategy is based on a ceasefire that has not yet been achieved, leaving the prosperity plan vulnerable as long as the fighting continues. The funding strategy extends until 2040, along with an immediate 100-day operational plan to get the project off the ground.
