Giulio Regeni, Mattarella: ‘Barbaric murder is an open wound for Italy’

Rome, 25 January (LaPresse) – ‘The kidnapping and barbaric murder of Giulio, one of our fellow citizens, remains an open wound in the body of the national community.’ Message from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to the parents of Giulio Regeni, on the tenth anniversary of the kidnapping and murder of the Italian researcher in Egypt in 2016. ‘Ten years after his disappearance, we reaffirm the universal principles of justice and respect for fundamental human rights, against all forms of torture,’ Mattarella remarked. ‘I extend my heartfelt thoughts to the parents,’ continued the Head of State, ‘who are struck by inconsolable grief for the loss of a son, admirable examples of courage and determination in the search for truth. Truth and justice must not be compromised.’
