Washington, Jan. 31 (LaPresse) – The streets of the U.S. capital will host an IndyCar race this summer, as part of the celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary. The announcement was made by President Donald Trump, who is excited at the idea of seeing the vehicles speed past the White House at nearly 200 miles per hour. Trump signed an executive order establishing the race on August 23, together with Roger Penske, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IndyCar, and teams in various racing series, including NASCAR. “It’s going to be so exciting,” Trump said. “I love racing. I don’t have much time to watch it, but I love it.” Penske suggested that “there’s no better way for us to bring motorsport and speed to the Washington area, and to have the opportunity to compete here with our IndyCars.” An IndyCar press release stated that the course will include the National Mall, and the executive order gives the Departments of Transportation and the Interior two weeks to designate a route through Washington “suitable for holding an INDYCAR street race and showcasing the majesty of our capital on the 250th anniversary of American independence.” The order also requires local officials and other agencies to work closely with the race organizers. The event confirms Trump’s commitment to sports during his second term. Most of his domestic trips have been devoted to attending major games and events, including the recent national football championship in Miami Gardens, Florida. But Trump does not plan to attend the upcoming Super Bowl on February 8 between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots in Santa Clara, California. In the case of the IndyCar, he will attend the race. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, also present at the Oval Office signing ceremony, exclaimed: “Just think, 190 miles per hour along Pennsylvania Avenue. It’s going to be insane.”
