Rome, Feb. 6 (LaPresse) – On preventive detention, “I have no doubts; on the contrary, I believe it is necessary to take measures given what is happening in terms of public order,” said Senate President Ignazio La Russa in an interview with Corriere della Sera. “There is a tension that some are trying to channel into the streets, creating disorder with the intention of subverting democratic rules. A real attack on the state,” he added. “And faced with repeated or very serious incidents, such as the attack on a police officer during the Turin march, which shocked and worried Italians, it would be unwise to do nothing, not to act.”
Regarding comparisons with the Years of Lead: “The climate is different, and fortunately we are not facing risks as serious politically. But the problem of public order certainly exists, especially regarding the protection of those responsible for enforcing it.”
“No authoritarian shift,” he continued. “Those who say so end up encouraging the violent. During the Years of Lead, violence and terrorism were fought, after many hesitations, first and foremost with political will, which is decisive. But this must be accompanied by measures that seem very interesting to me. Not to take away citizens’ freedom, but to guarantee their security and facilitate the work of law enforcement in all areas: staffing, remuneration, and the tools at their disposal. There is indeed a serious problem.”
