Frankfurt (Germany), 9 February (LaPresse) – ‘I implore Parliament to move forward on the digital euro: you hold the keys to how quickly it can be achieved.’ This was stated by ECB President Christine Lagarde in her reply to the European Parliament plenary session. Lagarde recalled that the Commission’s legislative proposal ‘has already been supported by the Council’ and that now ‘the responsibility lies in the hands of the co-legislators.’ ‘The digital euro is a fundamental element of our sovereignty, our independence and our ability to implement monetary policy,’ she added, stressing that without a European digital currency, the Union would remain dependent on non-European payment infrastructures.
