Milan, Feb. 14 (LaPresse) – NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, speaking during a panel at the Munich Security Conference, defended US President Donald Trump and his role in the peace process. “If we agree that only the American president was able to unlock the situation with Vladimir Putin, I think it was only him because he is the leader of the most powerful country on earth, a quarter of the world economy, the most powerful army on the planet. He unlocked the situation,” said Rutte, who strongly rejected the idea that there are “historical reasons” for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: “There was absolutely no reason for the Russians to invade Ukraine, neither in 2014 with Crimea, nor with the large-scale attack on Ukraine that began at the end of February 2022. This is absolutely, absolutely false,” the former Dutch prime minister said, emphasizing that it is essential “to ensure that Putin will never try to invade again.”
