Tariffs, Macron: ‘Checks and balances are good in democracy’

Turin, 21 February (LaPresse) – French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that the US Supreme Court ruling on President Donald Trump’s tariffs demonstrates that it is beneficial to have checks and balances on power and the rule of law in democracies. ‘It’s not a bad thing to have a Supreme Court and, consequently, the rule of law,’ he said at the annual Paris agricultural show, in response to a question about Friday’s ruling by the US Supreme Court that tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump under an economic emergency law were illegal. ‘It’s good to have checks and balances on power in democracies,’ Macron said. The Elysée Palace chief added that France will assess the consequences of Trump’s new 10% global tariff and that the country wants to continue exporting its products, including agricultural, luxury, fashion and aeronautical products. For Macron, a calm mindset is necessary and the fairest rule is ‘reciprocity’ and not ‘being subject to unilateral decisions’.
