Ukraine, Kallas: ‘Von der Leyen and Costa will hear Orban on Kiev loan freeze’

Brussels, 23 February (LaPresse) – “It is truly regrettable that the decision taken by all the leaders of the European Council is now a step backwards. I know that President Costa and President von der Leyen will both be in Kiev tomorrow and will certainly raise the issue with Prime Minister Orban as well, because it is not in line with the clause of loyal cooperation provided for in the treaties.” This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, at the press conference following the Foreign Affairs Council, speaking about Hungary’s blocking of the £90 billion loan to Kiev. ‘We know that elections are coming up in Hungary, but it is very difficult for me, considering and knowing the history of Hungary, to imagine that the Hungarian people would actually support refusing to help the Ukrainian people in need. So I find it very difficult to believe that this could lead to more votes in the elections, not knowing the political climate in Hungary,’ Kallas said.
