Rome, 27 February (LaPresse) – “The celebration of the establishment of the National Fire Brigade – for the first time on 27 February – is an opportunity to renew the Republic’s appreciation and gratitude to those who dedicate themselves every day to protecting people’s safety, safeguarding property and promoting an increasingly widespread culture of safety and risk prevention. Eighty-seven years ago, the founding of the National Corps marked a fundamental step in the process of organising a unified structure, called upon to ensure rescue and fire prevention for all citizens, strengthening the Fire Brigade as an essential reference point in the public rescue and civil protection system, protagonists in the event of disasters and other dramatic circumstances that have marked the history of the country.” These were the words of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in his message to the Head of the Department of Firefighters, Public Rescue and Civil Defence, Attilio Visconti. ‘This year, among other things, we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Florence flood, the 50th anniversary of the Friuli Venezia Giulia earthquake and the Seveso disaster, and the 10th anniversary of the earthquake in Central Italy. Even in recent weeks, in the south of the country and on the islands affected by exceptional bad weather, fire brigade teams have worked tirelessly, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to the common good. On today’s anniversary, in paying heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives in the fulfilment of their mission, I renew my deepest sympathy to their families. I wish all firefighters and their loved ones a happy holiday,” concluded the Head of State.
