Mercosur, Macron: ‘Provisional application of agreement is an unpleasant surprise’

Turin, 27 February (LaPresse) – ‘For France, it is a surprise, and an unpleasant one. For the European Parliament, it is a bad way of doing things.’ This was how French President Emmanuel Macron commented on the European Commission’s decision to provisionally apply the agreement as soon as it is ratified by one Mercosur country. ‘The Commission took the unilateral decision despite the European Parliament not voting in favour. It is therefore taking on a very heavy responsibility,’ Macron explained, as quoted by the French media. ‘It is a great responsibility towards farmers who have expressed their concerns’ and ‘it is also a great responsibility towards European citizens and their representatives who have not been duly respected,’ he added.
