Iran, Bannon: ‘Meloni is not a bridge between the US and the EU’

Milan, 18 March (LaPresse) – “It proves exactly what I have been saying for some time, in the face of a completely false media narrative: Giorgia Meloni is not a bridge between America and the European political establishment.” This is what Steve Bannon, former adviser to Donald Trump, told the daily newspaper La Repubblica, commenting on the Prime Minister’s decision not to have Italy intervene alongside Washington to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. “When the United States needed an ally to take a stand and support a joint naval effort to keep the Hormuz, Red Sea and Suez routes open – through which oil and gas bound for Europe pass – she backed out,” added Bannon. “This behaviour will have enormous implications regarding Ukraine. Having been made a fool of by NATO, I cannot see how the American people can support further funding or security guarantees.” Bannon then emphasised: “There are differences between the US and Israel regarding the campaign’s objectives. The turning point came when the Jewish state bombed Iranian oil infrastructure, because this runs counter to American interests. Doing so fuels Persian nationalism, which brings the population closer to the regime, or at least strengthens it, because, feeling under attack, Iranians first and foremost need to defend themselves.”
