Switzerland: cable car plummets in Engelberg due to strong winds; one person killed

Frankfurt (Germany), 18 March (LaPresse) – One person has died following a cable car crash in the canton of Nidwalden, near Engelberg, in Switzerland. This was confirmed by the cantonal police, who stated that the victim was alone in the cable car at the time of the accident. According to the authorities, the person was rescued and resuscitated at the scene, but subsequently died from their serious injuries. Their identity has not yet been released. The accident occurred shortly before 11 am near Engelberg, just past the midway station. The cabin plunged down a slope, overturning several times. At the time of the incident, strong gusts of wind were reported in the area. Despite this, the cable car was in operation: “Why it was operational is the subject of the ongoing investigation,” explained Deputy Police Commander Senad Sakic. The investigation is being conducted by the Nidwalden police with the support of the Swiss Safety Investigation Service. The authorities have announced that further information will be released later today. Another cable car has been evacuated and rescue operations are still ongoing.
