Hungary, EU: ‘The leak to Moscow is very worrying; Budapest must clarify the matter’

Brussels, 23 March (LaPresse) – ‘Reports concerning the alleged disclosure by the Hungarian Foreign Minister to his Russian counterpart of the outcome of a closed-door ministerial discussion within the Council are a cause for great concern. The relationship of trust between Member States and between them and the institution is fundamental to the functioning of the EU, and we expect the Hungarian government to provide clarification.’ This was stated by the European Commission’s spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, Anitta Hipper, during the daily press briefing in response to a question about the Washington Post report claiming that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto “made regular phone calls during breaks in EU meetings to brief his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov”.
