Athletics, Rome officially bids for 2029–2031 World Championships

Turin, Apr. 4 (LaPresse) – The Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL) announced that it “has submitted to World Athletics the candidacy of the city of Rome to host the World Championships in 2029 or 2031. The project has been deemed valid by the Government, which, through Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, provided a letter of support included in the bid dossier.” This is stated in a FIDAL note. “According to the procedure established by World Athletics, candidate cities will have until August 5 to complete the documentation, including the essential guarantees of economic sustainability which, in our case, will be the subject of further in-depth discussions with the Government,” the federation added. “In September, finally, the decision will be made on the city that will host the world championships.” Italy has hosted the World Athletics Championships only once: from Aug. 29 to Sept. 6, 1987, at Rome’s Olympic Stadium. The same venue had previously hosted the 1960 Olympic Games and the 1974 European Championships, and less than two years ago again staged the continental championships.
