Tehran, April 4 (LaPresse) – Iran has announced that Iraq is exempt from transit restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. The spokesperson for the Iranian Joint Military Command, Ebrahim Zolfaghari, stated in Arabic that the restrictions imposed in the Strait of Hormuz “apply only to enemy countries” and addressed Iraqis by saying: “You are a nation bearing the marks of the American occupation on your chest, and your struggle against America is worthy of appreciation and praise.” Since the start of the war, Iran-backed militias in Iraq have claimed responsibility for dozens of attacks on U.S. bases and other facilities in solidarity with Tehran. The war with Iran, now in its second month, has severely impacted the Iraqi economy. The country relies heavily on oil revenues for nearly 90% of its budget, and most of its oil is exported through the Strait of Hormuz, where commercial traffic has effectively been blocked by Iran during the conflict.
