Giro d’Italia, Joao Almeida announces withdrawal due to a viral syndrome

Turin, 27 April. (LaPresse) – The Giro d’Italia loses one of its protagonists. Joao Almeida, leader of the UAE Team Emirates XRG, will not be at the start of the Corsa Rosa due to a viral syndrome which complicated his approach to the Giro. “Unfortunately I won’t be there – wrote the Portuguese cyclist in a post on Instagram – The illness in recent months has affected my preparation too much, I wouldn’t have been ready in time. And it’s a shame given that it is a race that I love so much. After speaking with the team, we decided that it is better to take a period of rest and turn our attention towards new goals later in the season. We haven’t decided which ones yet, but we will do so quietly in the next few weeks. Now it’s time to rest a bit”.
