Turin, 1 May (LaPresse) – Clashes and tensions erupted in Turin during the May Day celebrations, when a group of anarchists broke away from the main march and headed towards Corso Regina Margherita, near the former Askatasuna social centre. Here, the demonstrators attempted to break through the police line, striking shields with sticks and spraying irritant substances at officers and military personnel. The police contingent, including riot police, charged the demonstrators and used water cannons to disperse the crowd. After a brief lull in the clashes, the situation escalated again with glass bottles being thrown at the police. Some of the demonstrators then sat down on the road, blocking traffic in the affected section. Other groups dispersed into the surrounding streets, attempting to bypass the cordon and reach the area behind the building. The police were forced to fire tear gas to contain the violent demonstrators.
