Rome, 21 May (LaPresse) – US President Donald Trump has raised the possibility of speaking directly with Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, in what would be an unprecedented move since the severing of official diplomatic relations between Washington and Taipei in 1979. This was reported by CNN. “I will speak to him,” Trump told reporters in response to a question about whether he might contact Lai before authorising a major new arms sale to the island, which has already been approved by Congress. “I speak to everyone. We have the situation under control,” the US president added before boarding Air Force One, emphasising: “We will also deal with Taiwan.”
