Rome, 21 May (LaPresse) – The US armed forces have announced the deployment of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier strike group to the Caribbean, against a backdrop of growing tensions between the United States and Cuba. “The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17), the USS Gridley (DDG 101) and the USNS Patuxent (T-AO 201) represent the epitome of operational readiness and presence, of unrivalled reach and lethality, and of strategic advantage,” stated the US Southern Command on X. The deployment comes on the same day that the Trump administration announced the indictment of former Cuban President Raúl Castro for his alleged role in the 1996 downing of two civilian aircraft belonging to the Miami-based exile group ‘Brothers to the Rescue’, in which four people lost their lives, including three Americans.
