Belgrade (Serbia), May 23 (LaPresse/AP) – Tens of thousands of people today took part in a demonstration called by Serbian university students protesting against authoritarian President Aleksandar Vucic. Protesters flocked to Slavija Square in Belgrade, the capital, many carrying banners and T-shirts with the youth movement’s motto, “Students Win.” Columns of cars entered Belgrade from other Serbian cities early in the day. Serbia’s state-owned railway company had canceled all trains to and from Belgrade in an attempt to prevent at least some people from participating in the demonstration. Meanwhile, Vucic’s loyalists gathered in a camp set up in a park outside the Serbian presidential palace, which he himself had set up ahead of another large anti-government demonstration. Folk music blared from a fenced-in area surrounded by riot police.
