Milan, 26 May (LaPresse) – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that she has “no problem” with her country hosting the Iranian national team at the World Cup, after their training camp was moved from the United States to Mexico for the summer football tournament. The Iranian team will still play its matches in the United States, but its training camp has been moved to Tijuana, Mexico, south of San Diego, California. FIFA confirmed the move on Monday. The decision comes against the backdrop of the war in Iran. Sheinbaum told a press conference that a FIFA representative had informed her that the US was reluctant to allow the Iranian national team to spend time on US soil outside of match days. “The United States does not want the Iranian national team to stay overnight in the United States,” Sheinbaum told reporters. She added that a FIFA representative had then asked: “Can they stay overnight in Mexico? And we replied: ‘Yes, no problem. We have no objections’,” she concluded.
