Rome, 26 May (LaPresse) – The Modena Public Prosecutor’s Office has submitted a request to the investigating magistrate for a psychiatric assessment of Salim El Koudri, the 31-year-old arrested on charges of mass murder and grievous bodily harm following the events of 16 May, when he allegedly ran over seven people on the Via Emilia and then attempted to stab one of them with a knife. The assessment may be ordered as part of a preliminary hearing, a decision to be made by the investigating judge. Defence lawyer Fausto Gianelli explained the public prosecutor’s decision to LaPresse: ‘Following discussions with the Modena Public Prosecutor’s Office, the prosecutor considered there to be valid grounds for assessing El Koudri, acknowledging the psychiatric issues we had highlighted regarding our client.’ The lawyer also noted that the investigators had taken into account ‘pre-existing psychiatric conditions diagnosed in 2023 by the Castelfranco Mental Health Centre’.
