Rome, 29 May (LaPresse) – During the night of 28–29 May, during a Russian drone attack on Ukraine, one of the drones flew over Romania and crashed onto the roof of a residential building. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing the Romanian Ministry of Defence’s website. ‘The drone violated Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar in the southern part of the city of Galați and crashed onto the roof of a block of flats, causing a fire. Specialised teams from the IGSU and other units of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Romanian secret services and the Romanian police were deployed to the scene,’ the report states. The agency added that its radars had detected drones flying near the country’s airspace. In response, Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter at 01:19. “The pilots of the aircraft were authorised to engage the targets for the duration of the alert,” the website added. The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations also confirmed the incident. It specified that, following the drone crash, a flat on the tenth floor caught fire and two people were injured. Rescue workers quickly extinguished the fire and the injured received treatment at the scene.
