Milan, June 2 (LaPresse) – “Due to an unannounced strike at the Skeyes air traffic control tower, air traffic will be suspended throughout Belgium from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2.” This is according to the Brussels Airport website. The airport is urging travelers not to go to the airport. Affected travelers will be contacted by their airline. Approximately 200 flights to and from Brussels Airport have been canceled as a result of the protest. The airport in the Belgian capital has announced that flights scheduled between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. will be postponed until after 9 p.m., if operationally feasible. Skeyes manages air traffic to and from Belgian airports and airspace up to an altitude of approximately 7,500 meters. Aircraft flying over the country at higher altitudes are guided by Eurocontrol. Yesterday morning, several employees in the control towers at the airports in Liège and Charleroi had already gone on strike, and this spontaneous action was followed by other strikers in other departments of Skeyes. This was reported by De Morgen. The sector’s dissatisfaction stems from the new digital control center in Namur, which will become operational next year and will remotely manage aircraft traffic during takeoff and landing, as well as all ground movements at Charleroi and Liège.
