Milan, 5 June (LaPresse) – “We don’t do what is popular, but what is right for the country. Today we are not self-sufficient in energy: we import 15-20% from abroad, mainly from French nuclear power. And the times we are living in teach us that we must look to the future before it overwhelms us. To be able to generate power by the middle of the next decade, we need to put the tools in place today.‘ So said the Minister for the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, in an interview with the “Corriere della Sera”, following the Chamber of Deputies’ initial approval of the enabling bill on nuclear power. Regarding the approval of the implementing decrees – he emphasised – ’we have a year. But I have committed to presenting them before Christmas, so as to complete the legal framework and allow whoever is in government to make the necessary choices by the end of the decade‘. Does he fear a referendum on the nuclear bill? ’No. I have the utmost respect for the choices of the citizens. We will be able to explain that there is nothing to fear”, Pichetto Fratin emphasised.
