Naples, 5 June (LaPresse) – A video posted by basketball star LeBron James showing him on holiday in Capri, practising his golf swing in front of the Faraglioni rocks, has sparked controversy. The video shows the NBA star practising hitting balls from a platform; once struck, the balls fly out of shot, presumably ending up in the sea. Codacons Campania has weighed in on the matter. ‘It is an unworthy and shameful act,’ declares president Matteo Marchetti, announcing that ‘the matter will be reported to the Naples Public Prosecutor’s Office, which must necessarily proceed on the grounds of the offence of environmental pollution’, unless, Marchetti stresses, ‘all the balls are recovered’. Codacons Campania intends to file a complaint ‘pursuant to Article 452 bis of the Italian Criminal Code’, which punishes “with imprisonment of between 2 and 6 years and a fine of between €10,000 and €100,000 anyone who unlawfully causes significant and measurable impairment or deterioration: of water or air, or of extensive or significant portions of the soil or subsoil; of an ecosystem, biodiversity—including agricultural biodiversity—or flora or fauna‘. Marchetti expresses ’dismay at such brazenness and offence against nature, and not because Capri is Italian, but because nature and its beauty must always be respected, both in Italy and elsewhere. We would be in trouble if we did not intervene immediately”.
