Milan, June 6 (LaPresse) – The “catastrophe” of the defeat in the referendum on the separation of careers “is not in the numbers, 53% against 47% is not a disaster, but the disappointment was great, especially in relation to the expectations we had. It is clear that faced with an expression of popular will, which can be interpreted in many ways — political, emotional or otherwise — it has nevertheless been expressed and must be respected, and the path of reforms is much more difficult.” This was said by Justice Minister Carlo Nordio at the Innovation Festival organized by Il Foglio in Venice. “The civil liability of magistrates, in my opinion, is an useless measure, because hitting an incompetent, inadequate, unworthy, unprepared magistrate in the wallet has no deterrent effect and no punitive effectiveness either, because they are all, and we are all, fully insured. There is no sense in financially sanctioning an inadequate magistrate. Instead, they should be sanctioned in their career, in promotions or even, in cases of absolute inadequacy, removed. That is, they must either change profession or possibly change office,” the Justice Minister concluded.
