Rome, June 8 (LaPresse) – Italian tennis is celebrating. Flavio Cobolli is the tenth Italian ever to enter the top ten players in the world in men’s singles in the entire history of tennis: he has in fact gained 4 positions and is now the new world No. 10. Before 1973, when the computer ranking was introduced, the most authoritative journalists would name the world’s top 10 at the end of each season: in those years, only Uberto de Morpurgo, Giorgio De Stefani and Nicola Pietrangeli were included in the top 10, with Pietrangeli, ranked No. 3 in 1959 and 1960, remaining the highest-ranked Italian in men’s tennis before Jannik Sinner, the first Italian world No. 1. In the computer ranking era, the list of Italian top 10 players previously included only Adriano Panatta and Corrado Barazzutti until 2019. Then came Fabio Fognini, Matteo Berrettini, Sinner, Lorenzo Musetti and now Flavio Cobolli. This milestone comes in the wake of a Roland Garros that, despite not ending in victory, remains record-breaking for Italian men’s tennis. For the first time in a Grand Slam, three Italians reached the quarterfinals. Alongside Cobolli there were Matteo Berrettini and Matteo Arnaldi, who were due to face the Roman player in an all-Italian derby in a Grand Slam semifinal. Both Berrettini and Arnaldi have returned to the Top 50 thanks to this result. The player from Sanremo has gained 70 positions, becoming world No. 34, while Berrettini has climbed 57 places to reach No. 48. There are thus six Italians in the ATP top 50 this week. Behind them, Andrea Pellegrino achieves his best ranking, No. 109 (+15 positions compared to the previous ranking), thanks to his semifinal at the Perugia Challenger. At the top remains Jannik Sinner, who despite his loss to Juan Manuel Cerundolo increases his lead over Carlos Alcaraz by 750 points: the Spaniard, in fact, has dropped the 2,000 points from his 2025 Roland Garros title. Sinner leads with 13,500 points, while Alcaraz follows with 9,960. Behind them, however, Alexander Zverev is closing in, gaining 1,600 points compared to the previous ranking. After his triumph at Roland Garros, his first Grand Slam title, he has risen to 7,305 points, 2,605 behind Alcaraz.
